BALI & LOMBOKParadise islands in an idyllic location - that's how most people perceive Bali and Lombok and they would not be far wrong! Even after recent events in Bali, there is still a certain magic about these two jewels in the Indonesian chain which manifests itself in their charming, smiling peoples, who will welcome you with open arms. The beaches are glorious, but there is far more to these islands swaying palms and it would be a travesty to miss out on the mountains, rice terraces and temples of the hinterland. The Place In terms of scenery, Bali and Lombok are similar, although higher rainfall in Bali makes it lusher and greener. In Bali, there is a choice of beach resorts and your decision will depend on your preferences. If you like a village atmosphere and a taste of the old Bali, choose Sanur. If you prefer more sophistication, you may be more at home in modern Nusa Dua. Whatever you do, make time to visit the mountains, and to really experience their beauty, consider a side trip to Ubud and Candi Dasa. Lombok is generally quieter, but Senggigi is the main beach area. Choose the south for splendid isolation. The Culture Indonesia is culturally exotic and vibrant blending centuries old traditions with present. The community spirit is paramount in the lives of these peoples and caring and sharing are an intrinsic part of their lifestyle. On Bali, "the island of the gods", daily offerings are made to acknowledge the bounty of the gods. The Shopping On both islands, there are shopping opportunities in abundance and some excellent ethic handicrafts markets, where your bargaining skills will be put to good use. The people of Bali are well know for their artistic skills and you will find some great souvenirs to take home with you from beautiful wood carvings in ebony and ivory colours to stunning paintings. The Nightlife It really is what you make it! It tends to be low key with most entertainment centred around the hotel complexes in the form of cultural shows and themed nights. Night owls should head for Kuta in Bali, where there are clubs and bars galore. Lombok is most defiantly the quieter neighbour, but there are a few bars in the Sengiggi Beach area. Eating out is fantastic value and most of the resort areas have a range of restaurants where you can try out the local cuisine with its unique Indonesian spices. Don't miss out on the most famous Balinesian dish "guling celeng" - spit roasted suckling pig. The locals do like their food hot, so beware! Western food is available in hotelsd for those who prefer to keep their taste buds in tact.
