GRAN CANARIA
Huge rolling sand dunes dominate the popular resorts dotted along Gran Canaria's southern coastline, with shelving sands creating the perfect environment for safe family holidays, and bustling beach-front bars appealing to couples of all ages. The resorts of Playa del Ingles, Maspalomas, Sonnenland, Puerto Rico, Puerto Mogan and San Agustin have been purpose-built, with an exhausting range of facilities and attractions to ensure you never have to travel too far for holiday fun. The obvious temptation for a summer sun break in any one of the six is to stretch out, soak up the sun and recharge the batteries to enjoy Gran Canaria's legendary nightlife to the full. But if you can find the time, pick up a car or take an excursion to explore the beautiful village of Tejeda, the chic shopping of island capital Las Palmas, or the formerly explosive beauty of Bandama Crater, now thankfully extinct. Whatever your preference, our range of accommodation will allow you to enjoy Gran Canaria to the full. LANGUAGE: Spanish CURRENCY: Euro FOOD & DRINK The majority of resorts in Gran Canaria offer an abundance of middle to high class restaurants, snack bars/cafés and fast food outlets. Restaurants serving typical local cuisine offer good value for money in a cheerful atmosphere. Local speciality dishes include 'rancho canario', a thick soup with vegetables and meat; 'puchero canario', chick peas, meat and beans; and 'mojo', typical Canarian spicy sauce. The most common drink you will come across is banana liqueur made from the locally grown fruit. Spanish wines and spirits are good value and slightly cheaper than in the UK. Local beer is also produced but is rather weak. LOCAL COSTS As an indication of price for the most typical and popular items bought locally, the following rough guide has been put together. Please note all costs are approximate. Bottle of wine from £2.50 (supermarket) SHOPPING Bargain buys include cigarettes/tobacco, wines/spirits and perfumes. Local specialities which are highly recommended include hand embroidery, lace and wicker baskets. Tobacco produced here is excellent and world famous, while cigars from the Canary Islands are outstanding in quality. Price haggling is acceptable in markets and bazaars, and all shopping centres in the larger resorts offer a variety of shops and bargains. BEACHES Maspalomas is home of the famous sand dunes and a very popular beach; the central area is a naturist beach. Playa del Ingles has a very large stretch of sandy beach and Puerto Rico has a small sandy shore within the port area that is surrounded by a little marina. All the beaches have been granted the EC Blue Flag. SPORTS There are many sports facilities in Gran Canaria, of which watersports are the most popular including windsurfing, jetskiing, pedaloes and swimming. Other activities include ten-pin bowling, football, golf, roller-skating, tennis, squash, volleyball and go-karting. NIGHTLIFE The most lively resorts on the island are Playa del Ingles and the commercial centre of Puerto Rico, where you can discovedr numerous bars, open to 4.00am, and a wide selection of nightclubs open to 6.00am. If you want a quieter life then Maspalomas and some areas of Puerto Rico offer a more relaxed atmosphere.
