IBIZA

Undoubtedly the greatest surprise package of the Balearic Islands, the appeal of Ibiza is far more diverse than you might think.

Of course, Ibiza Town can be outrageous, and the fashion parades of Friday and Saturday evenings always raise a few eyebrows. It's true that San Antonio remains the nightlife capital of the Med, and its all-night hotspots in the 'West End' are not the location for the shy and retiring. But Ibiza also offers so much more, the superb family resorts to the north and east, present a total contrast to their lively neighbours. Even the coastline offers incredible variety, from the long sandy beaches of Playa d'en Bossa in the south to the rocky coves and crystal waters of Portinax in the north.

Travel into the heart of the island and traditional island-life is still very evident, apparently undisturbed by the arrival of tourism in Ibiza.

We've hand picked our favourite Ibiza resorts to allow all our visitors the chance to make the most of this beautiful island.

Wherever and whenever you go, you'll certainly go back.

FOOD & DRINK

Eating out is a social pleasure in Ibiza. You will be able to find an assortment of dishes to suit all tastes. Local specialities are highly recommended and there is quite a selection to chose from including; 'Truita pagesa' (omelette with potato, tomato and red pepper); 'Paella' (a rice dish based on fish or meat); and 'Pez Espada' (swordfish).

Wines to look out for during your stay include 'Vi Pages' which is usually red or rosé made locally. Also worth trying are 'Hierbas Ibicencas' and 'Anis' which are alcoholic drinks both made locally from herbs.

LOCAL COSTS

As an indication of price for the most typical and popular items bought locally, the following rough guide has been put together. Please note all costs are approximate.

Bottle of wine from £1.10 (supermarket)
3 course meal from £6.00
Hamburger & Chips £2.00
Glass of beer £0.75
Cup of coffee £0.55
Soft drink £0.65

SHOPPING

One of the best buys is footwear, in particular rope-soled shoes which are made locally in different styles and designs.

Pottery is also very popular including hand painted pots and plates.

A bottle of one of the local wines or Sherries is recommended as a souvenir.

BEACHES

Wherever you may be on Ibiza you will always be near one of the secluded little coves or rocky inlets with fine white sand and inviting water that the island has to offer.

Several of Ibiza's beaches were awarded the EC Blue Flag in 1991 for being amongst the cleanest and clearest in Europe.

SPORTS

Like the other Balearic Islands, the most popular sports in Ibiza are water-based, including waterskiing, windsurfing, snorkelling, swimming, sailing and pedaloes. Other activities include tennis, golf, horse riding and fishing.

NIGHTLIFE

The majority of the resorts that we feature are reasonably small and quiet in comparison to the larger towns. Most resorts have at least a couple of nightclubs and a variety of bars and restaurants. However if you want a really lively night out we suggest one of the bigger towns nearby like San Antonio or Ibiza Town where the action is non-stop.
