MENORCA
If you were asked to list all your main priorities in planning an unforgettable family holiday, in no time at all you'd find yourself describing Menorca. Think about a choice of over 100 beaches, from flat, shelving shorelines to secluded, quiet coves. Think about restaurants serving superb local delicacies, where kids are treated as VIP guests rather than little nuisances. Think about fascinating day trips to the historic harbour side towns of Ciudadela and the island's capital Mahon. Even though it's the second largest of the three principal Balearic Islands, Menorca remains more tranquil than its boisterous neighbours and continues to offer a superb get-away-from-it-all holiday just two hours flying from the UK. No wonder it's been our favourite family destination for the last few years. LANGUAGE: Spanish CURRENCY: Euro FOOD & DRINK There is a wide selection of places to eat on the island, ranging from local bars serving specialities to à la carte restaurants. The local fish dishes are particularly tasty and good value, including squid, prawns and lobster. 'Tapas' are traditional bite sized snacks made with meat, olives, fried fish or vegetables and are usually served with drinks. Not to be missed is the local speciality drink, Gin Xoriguer, which is distilled at Mahon harbour. LOCAL COSTS As an indication of price for the most typical and popular items bought locally, the following rough guide has been put together. Please note all costs are approximate.
SHOPPING Probably the best buy in Menorca is footwear, particularly the locally manufactured sandals known as 'Abarcas'. Shoes, leather bags and jackets can be great value and of good quality. Jewellery is a Menorcan speciality, but shop around as prices and quality can vary. Locally produced pottery is also good value and most resorts have at least one pottery shop. BEACHES There is a variety of beaches in Menorca, from long, golden, sandy stretches to small secluded coves. One of the best beaches along the island's coast is located at Cala Galdena which is a large beach in a magnificent setting. The resort of Santo Tomas enjoys a wonderful, gently shelving sandy beach, whilst Son Bou boasts the island's longest beach of golden sand. SPORTS As with most of the popular Mediterranean resorts, water sports are the main activity, including parasailing, pedaloes, gondolas, sailing, windsurfing, snorkelling, scuba diving and waterskiing. Other sports available on the island include bowling, cricket, tennis, squash, horse-riding and golf. NIGHTLIFE The majority of nightlife centres around the local bars and nightclubs. You can discover a variety of bars throughout the resorts, varying from small, quiet local bars to large, modern English-run pubs. Bars are open all day and all ages are allowed inside as they serve coffee and tea as well as drinks of all descriptions. Bars tend to close at will - usually when the last customer leaves. Discos don't usually open until at least 11.00pm.
