RHODES
The best sunshine record in the whole of Greece and superb beaches coupled with a healthy dose of history and culture from the Colossus of Rhodes to the Lindos Acropolis.
Explore Rhodes
Ancient history has left its mark all over Rhodes, from the top of the Acropolis of Lindos there is a wonderful view over this charming village with its whitewashed houses nestling into the mountainside.
Outlined by the old walls of a ruined fortress, Rhodes Town is buzzing and cosmopolitan, with an excellent selection of restaurants, good shops and a busy harbour, whilst the Old Town bears numerous reminders of the islands history, scattered amongst its bustling bazaars and narrow cobbled streets.
Eating and Drinking
The islands restaurants offer an excellent seafood selection; try Symi/Lindos shrimps, freshly caught mini shrimps eaten whole.
Souvlaki is either grilled pork or chicken, served with or without pitta bread.
Local wines from Emery or Cair, the local wine distillers are reasonably priced and of a high standard.
Local Interest and Culture
The palace of the Grand Master, now a museum, was once home to the Grand Master and the Knights of St John.
The Lindos Acropolis was one of the three ancient cities of Rhodes.
Old Rhodes Town is home to many museums and art galleries, with walks on parts of the old city walls.
Beaches
Prassonissi is one of only three places in the world where you can see two seas meet the Aegean and Mediterranean, divided by a sandbank.
Tsambica Beach is a large sandy beach with safe, clear waters.
Blue Flag beaches are recognised as having high environmental, sanitary and safety standards. 37 beaches in Rhodes received the Blue Flag award in 2003. For more details refer to www.blueflag.org
