Zakynthos is an island of contrasts. The nightlife in Laganas will entertain even the most demanding fun seekers, while the peaceful, pine covered hills, beautiful sandy beaches, and spectacular cliffs will enchant anyone with a love of nature.

Explore Zakynthos

Zakynthos Town, a modern yet charming reconstruction of the old Venetian town, is well worth a visit and from the harbour; you can take a boat trip to visit the mysterious shipwreck at Smugglers Cove.

Away from the endless choice of bars and nightclubs in Laganas, a more relaxed form of evening entertainment can be found, with hospitable people and lively tavernas serving fabulous food in and around the other resorts.

Eating and Drinking
Regional specialities include Kokinsto, chunks of beef or chicken in tomato sauce and Kotopoulo Yemisto, roast chicken prepared with a stuffing of breadcrumbs, garlic, cheese and wine. Melitzzanosalata is a tasty dip comprising of baked aubergine mashed with garlic and olive oil.

Various local wines are available, some of which are very good and reasonably priced.

Local Interest and Culture
St Denis' Church in Zakynthos town is where the body of the saint is kept and one of only three buildings in the town to survive the 1953 earthquake.

Zakynthos is also home to the Byzantium Museum in Solomos Square, which houses a number of religious artefacts.

Beaches
There are many excellent beaches on the island.

Gerakas Beach in Vasilikos is beautiful and sandy, set in a gently sloping bay its protected as a turtle nesting area.

Water sports enthusiasts should head for Alykes Beach, this soft and sandy beach has an abundance of water based activities and lovely views.

Motorised water sports are not permitted in Laganas, Argassi and Kalamaki due to them being turtle protection areas. Pedaloes and boats are however usually available for hire.

Blue Flag beaches are recognised as having high environmental, sanitary and safety standards. 2 beaches in Zakynthos received the Blue Flag award in 2003. For more details refer to www.blueflag.org

Fun for the children
Largely centred around the beach and pool, but don't miss out on some of the family excursions.
